Kathrene Razo
Biography
Kathrene Razo’s journey to become an ESL professor began in Stockton during her youth in the late 1980’s where the majority of her classmates and friends were from the countries of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and India. In 1996, the experience of tutoring reading and writing while she was a student at San Joaquin Delta College inspired her passion to educate adult learners. Prior to earning her baccalaureate degree in literature, she volunteered as an English language mentor to international students from Korea at the Language Institute at San Francisco State University. This unique experience left a lasting impression, which focused her career path as an English language educator. After she graduated with her Bachelor of Arts degree in literature, she taught ESL in such adult education programs as vocational ESL (VESL) medical terminology for medical professionals, Cal Works English Immersion, college non-credit survival English, work-related ESL (WESL) for the International Rescue Committee, a refugee resettlement organization, community college credit ESL, and private university EL transition programs. Kathrene has been teaching ESL for over ten years, and she considers herself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to teach students from over 30 different countries. She believes that the establishment of a safe and meaningful learning environment which promotes cultural awareness and sensitivity is elemental. The cultural awareness and sensitivity that she has for her students makes it clear to them that the classroom is a place of mutual respect and kindness.
Kathrene earned a Master of Arts in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and a TEFL Certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) from Azusa Pacific University. She also has a California Adult Education Teaching Credential from UC San Diego and UCLA, a Bachelor of Arts in Literature from San Francisco State University, and an Associate of Arts in English from San Joaquin Delta College.
