Biography

Michael Akard has been teaching at the college level since 1988 when, as a graduate student, he worked at the American English Institute at CSU Fresno. After finishing his MA in Linguistics in 1990, he came first to MJC (his Alma Mater), and then traveled to Kuwait to teach at Kuwait University. After three years in Kuwait, he returned to California and taught at Merced College and Turlock Adult School, but headed back to the Middle East in 1998 to take a position at the Military Language Institute in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Michael finally landed back in Modesto in 2000 and has been teaching full-time at MJC since 2001.

Michael is a fencer, plays bagpipes, enjoys ping-pong, and has a special interest in Arabic language and culture. And he recently took up archery.
