INFORMATION: SUMMER 2012

SPANISH 101 HYBRID-ONLINE COURSE

iHola!

If you are interested in taking a Spanish 101 Hybrid Online course this summer, please be realistic about how much time you have to commit and consider the following:

1) This is a five-unit course. The five units of instruction are divided as follows:

                A) a mandatory class meeting once a week:

~ Section #1515 meets on Tuesdays from 1:50-4:55pm at Founders Hall 252

~ Section #0067 meets on Wednesdays from 1:50-4:55pm Founders Hall 252

                B) Five and a half (5.5) hours of weekly independent, online learning.

                C) In addition to this weekly 8.5 hour commitment, please keep in mind the total time required for success in a college level course: two hours of study time for each unit taken. That means that for this course, students should plan on spending at least 10 hours of study time in addition to the 8.5 hours of instruction on a weekly basis.

2) To be successful in this course, you need to have basic computer skills and be able to navigate the Internet with ease. This course requires that you have a reliable connection to the Internet because you will be completing work online on a daily basis. The computer you use should have a working microphone and a webcam.

3) ALL STUDENTS must be ready to purchase the required TEXTBOOK BUNDLE the first day of class: Vistas: Introduccion a la lengua espanola FOURTH Edition by Blanco et. al. It contains: (1) loose-leaf textbook Leccion 1-6 AND (2) the Supersite Plus code.

WHERE TO PURCHASE THE TEXTBOOK BUNDLE?

~ Pirates Bookstore and the Off Campus Bookstore.

~ Direct from the publisher. Click on:  Modesto Junior College . Select the MJC icon then “Spanish 101-All sections”.

4) Enrolled students that do not attend the first class meeting will be dropped and and add-card will be given to the next person on the waitlist.

5) If you are on the waitlist, you must attend the first class meeting. Waitlisted students who do not attend the first class meeting will lose their place on the list.

MORE ABOUT THE ONLINE COMPONENT OF THE COURSE

1) The majority of the homework for this class will be done on the Vistas Supersite. We will be covering about one chapter per week, starting the first week of classes.

2) I will use Blackboard 9.1 to manage the course. Please visit the Blackboard Resources webpage to determine if you are ready to take an online class, to access online services, and to do a browser/operating system check. This platform will be the main point of contact between us. Students enrolled in this course MUST log in to the Blackboard site PRIOR to attending the first day of class. Students who are given an add card must log in by Thursday of the first week of classes or he/she will be denied entry into the course.

IS THE SPANISH 101 HYBRID COURSE RIGHT FOR ME?

1) While this is an introductory Spanish course, it is fast-paced and it is recommended that you have taken at least one year (or two consecutive semesters) of high school Spanish within the last six months or have equivalent working knowledge of the language that will enable you to learn independently.

2) We will not have time to do extensive grammar review during our class meetings. The tutorials from the Vistas Supersite, information in the textbook and Blackboard 9.1 online instruction will be your main source of information as you complete activities from the electronic workbook on the Vistas Supersite.

3) If you did not READ through ALL of the information I posted after “Hola” because you got impatient, frustrated, or distracted, THIS COURSE IS NOT RIGHT FOR YOU. Please consider enrolling in a traditional course.
